Housing Unit Exploring Prefab Homes
10/30/2023
The Housing Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke wishes to inform the community that it is exploring new project concepts and ideas to provide affordable housing solutions to its clients. One avenue of exploration is Prefabricated (prefab) Modular housing type of dwelling as an immediate fix to address the current housing gap in the community.
Prefab is a term used to describe the type of building construction - homes are built off-site in a factory-controlled environment and then transported to the lot where it is assembled. The Prefab Modular homes will be equal to or superior in construction quality with a price considerably less than a comparable site-built home.
"It is important to start exploring new options to help address present needs while looking for the future growth and prosperity of the next generations in Kahnawą:ke," said Alan John Rice, Executive Operations Officer. "Co-existence of both prefab and regular construction would be ideal," said Areti Malliarou, Housing Unit Director.
As the Housing Unit will be working diligently in the coming weeks to provide a more thorough analysis of this exploratory approach, no specific details can be announced at this time. However, the community will be made aware as soon as more concrete information is available.
In the meantime, Housing is encouraging community members who have experience with prefab to share their experiences. This feedback, along with comments or questions, can be shared with the Housing Unit at 450-638-0500.
