Bill Whooper Meloche retires after 38 years of service
01/19/2024
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to wish one of its longest-serving bus drivers a very happy retirement. Bill Meloche’s last bus run of his stellar career was on Wednesday, January 17, 2024. Bill, or “Whooper” as most people know him, started his career at the MCK in 1979. Taking into account a break in service, he has provided safe transportation for our youth for nearly four (4) decades.
Bill loved his job, which was clearly evident during the COVID-19 Pandemic. He assisted with planning school bus routes for the entire village area and managed to drive eight (8) separate bus routes each morning and afternoon, transporting only 12 children at a time. In his off time, he would volunteer for the Kateri Food Basket, delivering food to those in need during a challenging period for our community.
“Bill was always open and friendly with all his co-workers and took the time to give help and advice when needed,” said Daily Transportation Manager Spencer McComber. “He will be greatly missed, as he is a true gentleman.”
After logging enough miles to circle the earth 1.75 times, today marks Bill’s last official day as an MCK employee, and we wish him well on his much-deserved retirement.
