MCK Agrees to Cover Ed Center Deficit
03/04/2009
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke announced today that it has finalized an agreement to cover up to $150,000 in shortfalls to the budget of the Kahnawà:ke Education Center (KEC). The agreement was formalized on Monday, March 2nd.
According to the KEC, a cutback of $500,000 from Indian and Northern Affairs in the area of Special Needs is at the root of the deficit. The elimination of certain positions and expenditures, and access to new funding sources lowered the projected deficit to approximately $150,000.
“The deficit coverage will come from the Ultimate Bet (UB) fine ($1.8 million) that was approved and designated by Chief & Council for specific purposes”, said Marcy Delisle, Director of Finance.
$300,000 from the UB fine has been designated for the Education Center’s budgetary needs for both this and next fiscal year. For details pertaining to the KEC budget, please contact Louie John Diabo at the coordinates listed below.
