KEPOs No Mow May/Nonen Onerahtohkowa Nikahawi, Tohsa Sewathentiak Challenge Returns
04/17/2024
The Kahnawake Environment Protection Office (KEPO) is inviting Kahnawakehronon to join the challenge for the month of May. The No Mow May/Nó:nen Onerahtohkó:wa Nikahá:wi, Tóhsa’ Sewathéntia’k! challenge asks community members to refrain from cutting their lawns for the entire month with the goal of supporting biodiversity and pollinators. The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is participating by reducing maintenance outside of priority areas cleared for public safety.
By waiting until June to cut our lawns, we:
- Allow pollinator insects, like endangered bees, and their food supplies the opportunity to undergo a critical part of their life cycle.
- Encourage native plant species to grow and thrive.
- Conserve resources, time, and money by not using lawn care equipment.
Participants will be asked to send weekly progress photos to environmentprotection@mck.ca. All participants who complete the No Mow May challenge will be entered into a draw to win one of three pollinator-themed prizes worth $150!
To register, please fill out the form at forms.gle/v99vcSGNx9pijKam6, or scan the QR code below with your smartphone to register. The first 20 participants to register will receive a No Mow May lawn sign.
