Heat Warning issued - recycling and compost pickup affected

06/17/2024

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake would like to inform the community that Environment Canada has issued a Heat Warning due to the high heat expected over the next three (3) days.

The Humidex values are expected to exceed 40 beginning this afternoon (Monday) and remain high through Thursday, with temperatures averaging between 30C and 35C (86F and 95F).

Due to the extreme high heat, and for the safety of employees, the Waste Management Department will complete all collections before 12pm noon on each of the high heat days. Please have all recycling, special collection items, and compost out by 7am sharp, and ensure your bin is at least 3/4 full before placing it at the curb. There will be no afternoon collections.

During high-heat events, its recommended to drink plenty of water, even before you feel thirsty.

Young children, pregnant women, the elderly, those with chronic underlying medical issues, and people working outdoors are at a higher risk.
