MCK Files Motion Against City of Chateauguay Over Industrial Fuel Spill

08/02/2024

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawake (MCK) has filed legal action against the City of Chateauguay in connection with the Industrial Fuel Spill that occurred on February 1, 2024.

The MCK alleges that the Chateauguay Fire Department failed to adequately address the spill during their response, potentially exacerbating the damages suffered by Kahnawà:ke.

According to the MCK, the response to the spill from the City of Chateauguay was insufficient. Furthermore, it has come to light that the city did not inform Environment Quebec or Canada about the fuel spill, raising concerns about the lack of transparency and potential environmental impact.

The MCK′s general motion seeks to hold the City of Chateauguay accountable for their actions and the resulting damages. While the motion currently targets the city, the MCK has indicated that other defendants may be added to the motion within the three-year limitation period.

"The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is committed to protecting the rights and interests of our community," stated Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo. "We believe that the City of Chateauguay′s inadequate response to the Industrial Fuel Spill has had a significant impact on Kahnawà:ke, and we will pursue all available legal avenues to seek justice."

The MCK remains dedicated to safeguarding the well-being of all community members and the environment and ensuring that the responsible parties are held accountable and will be holding a special meeting in the coming weeks to provide further updates directly to the community.
