MCK 2009/2010 Annual Budget
04/01/2009
The Finance Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) released the 2009/2010 Annual Budget to the media today at a press conference at the main MCK building. In spite of rising costs, including inflation, this year’s Budget of $44,655,276 is slightly less ($138,751) than last year and runs from April 1, 2009 to March 31, 2010.
"Although this year's budgeting process was a challenge due to the current economic conditions, MCK has managed to maintain program/service delivery and present a zero balance budget to meet Community needs for 2009-10,” said Director of Finance Marcy Delisle.
Slightly lowering the overall budget notwithstanding, the MCK is proud to continue its support of community organizations such as Kanien’kéha Onkwawenna Raotitiohkwa, Kahnawake Fire Brigade, Youth Center, Education Center and Library (sum of $910,000). Programs also continuing are the Elderly Snow Removal program ($29,757) and the Kahnawà:ke Visioning Project ($26,700). New initiatives include Infrastructure Rehabilitation of the Sesame Street area ($1,745,000), paving of Rural Roads ($65,000), and a Membership Law Study ($79,963). Areas of the budget where costs increased significantly this year were in School Bus Transportation ($1,150,855 vs. $952,178 budgeted last year) and Solid Waste Removal ($401,552 vs. $371,448 budgeted last year).
“As a result of financial constraints and limited resources, tight financial controls were adhered to and our Directors and Managers were successful at adjusting program budgets to continue to offer the level of service the Community is accustomed to. Chief and Council are committed to actively seeking means of revenue generation that will assist in meeting financial obligations for the future”, Delisle continued.
