North Creek Clean n Learn Event

10/21/2024

The Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO), in collaboration with the Waste Management department of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke, invites the community to a Creek Clean n′ Learn event on Sunday, October 27th, from 10am to 2pm. The cleanup will focus on the area of North Creek, starting near Slippery Elm Avenue and Red Bird Road (see map below), and continuing upstream towards the first culvert with the yellow railings. The work will continue as far as possible within the time frame.

KEPO will provide gloves and garbage bags for collecting trash around the creek, but participants are encouraged to bring their own boots or waders. In addition to the cleanup, KEPO will discuss the health of North Creek and its future and offer demonstrations on how to identify and remove invasive Reed Canary Grass and possibly Phragmites grass.

Coffee and snacks will be available.

Participants can park at the Tewatohnhi′saktha parking lot, where Waste Management will have a tent to distribute cleanup supplies. Late arrivals are welcome, as the meeting point is near Slippery Elm Avenue.

While the creek cannot be fully restored to its original state, significant improvements can be made to benefit future generations and the surrounding natural environment.

For more information, please contact KEPO at 450-635-0600 or email environmentprotection@mck.ca.
