Historic agreement signed with Correctional Services Quebec to enhance community reintegration
11/08/2024
The Public Safety Commission of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to announce the signing of a new, ground-breaking agreement with Correctional Services Quebec. The agreement was reaffirmed at a brief ceremony earlier today and was attended by representatives from the MCK, Kahnawà:ke Public Safety, and Acting Deputy Minister of Corrections Francois Demers.
Under this agreement, Public Security will assume responsibility for providing probation supervision for community members under court-mandated probation or conditional sentences returning to the Kahnawà:ke community.
This includes overseeing all probation orders and ensuring that individuals complete their community service hours and contribute positively to local initiatives as part of their rehabilitation. The emphasis will be on fostering positive community engagement and reinforcing responsible behaviour to improve long-term success for those under probation orders.
“We are proud to be taking a leadership role in the rehabilitation and reintegration of community members, ensuring that their needs are met with culturally relevant support,” said Community Safety Portfolio Lead Ratsénhaienhs Ryan Montour. “This contract strengthens our ability to make a positive impact, and we are committed to working with Correctional Services Quebec to enhance our community’s safety while helping individuals rebuild their lives.”
