04/28/2009
The Kahnawake Tobacco Association and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wish to inform the community that they have agreed to meet together to address the issue of tobacco regulation within the Territory.
This decision was taken after a preliminary meeting at Kahnawake Shakotiia’takehnhas Community Services on Monday, April 27, at which time an analysis was carried out defining the tobacco industry’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats.
“We have a great opportunity to pull together as a people to address an issue that has gone unresolved for far too long,” said portfolio Chief Rhonda Kirby.
“We’re very pleased at the results of the meeting,” said KTA board member and spokesperson Louis Stacey. “This is a positive step to make the tobacco industry more beneficial to the community.”
The next discussion has been scheduled for May 11. Both organizations have agreed to share their draft regulations and begin exploring solutions that would be beneficial to both the industry and the community in general.
