New school bus procedure for R-207
11/19/2024
The Daily Transportation Department of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) would like to advise the community that it has modified school bus procedures to enhance safety for students on R-207.
Starting immediately, all school buses will pick up and drop off students on the same side of the road as the exit door. This change will eliminate the need for children to cross R-207 to board the school bus and when being dropped off.
“This change in procedure is a direct result of the safety issues on R-207 and a means to keep our children safe”, said Spencer McComber, Daily Transportation Manager.
Parents are urged to speak to their children about the new safety procedure and to expect some delays due to the increased number of stops for R-207.
The decision to modify procedures for R-207 school buses was a direct result of recent reports of motorists passing school buses while stopped, even with the flashing red lights on and stop sign extended. It was a change that needed to take place immediately, as additional safety measures are also being considered, along with increased surveillance and speed-control measures which were discussed yesterday with the Council of Chiefs, Public Works, Public Safety Division and the Peacekeepers.
The MCK would like to thank residents of R-207 for their input and understanding regarding recent safety concerns.
