Housing Unit launches ISC-Child and Family Services Renovation Program
12/02/2024
The Housing Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is excited to announce the launch of the Indigenous Services Canada (ISC)-Child and Family Services Renovation Program, designed to support owner-occupied households with children and youth by addressing substandard housing conditions that may pose health and safety risks.
A launch event will take place on Tuesday, December 17th, from 10am to 6pm at the Knights of Columbus Hall. Community members are invited to attend and learn more about the program.
The program offers grants of up to $40,000 per family. In its initial year, 15 families will be targeted, with plans to expand the program in subsequent years.
“A program of this type is a long time coming. The Housing Unit receives multiple requests for home repair grants yearly,” said Executive Operations Officer Alan John Rice. “With pilot projects like this we hope to show that we are listening to the needs of community members. We hope to grow this program in the future years along with other housing initiatives to meet community needs.”
The pre-application process will officially open during the launch event on December 17th and will remain open until Saturday, February 1st, 2025. From Wednesday, December 18th onwards, pre-applications will be accepted by appointment only at the Housing Unit Offices, located on the first floor of the Kahnawà:ke Office Complex.
To be eligible, applicants must meet the following criteria:
- Registered on the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry
- Be the homeowner occupying the house
- Have at least one dependant (child or youth up to 26 years of age) living in the house full-time. Applicants sharing custody are eligible but must provide proof
- Require major repairs, have substandard or deficient housing, or face issues such as overcrowding or conditions posing health and safety risks to children or special needs, if applicable
Please note that the Housing Unit will be closed on Tuesday, December 17th, as the team will be hosting the event at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
This initiative aims to improve living conditions for children and youth in the community. Don’t miss this opportunity to access funding for essential home repairs that prioritize the safety and well-being of young residents.
