Community Survey on Proposed Use of Lot SLS 8 RE for Waste Management Infrastructure

12/04/2024

The Public Works Department of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke is seeking input from the community regarding the proposed use of Lot SLS 8 RE for the relocation of the Transfer Depot to the adjacent area and future construction of other Waste Management infrastructure. The new Eco-Center, to replace the Transfer Depot, will be larger and able to accommodate further separation of recyclable items from the waste stream. The relocation will also free up space at the current site to allow for the expansion of the Organics Composting Platform to complete the construction of the facility.

In addition, the expansion will allow for the creation of a new Snow Storage site closer to the new facility. The new Snow Storage site will replace the current one, which is located on River Road on Lot SLS 10. This will improve monitoring and security, helping to reduce the opportunity for illegal dumping by contractors from outside the community.

An impact study will be conducted on the proposed Eco-center. A Geotechnical study, a Phase 1 Environmental study, and a Project Impact assessment would be conducted to ensure the project’s safety and environmental responsibility. The Kahnawą:ke Environment Protection Office will work closely with Public Works to ensure all environmental standards are met throughout the proposed project phases.

As this project will potentially impact the community, we encourage all residents to take part in a community survey to share your thoughts and concerns.
