Community Consultation on Highway 30 returned lands

02/05/2025

The Lands Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) is pleased to announce the launch of the community consultation process regarding the designation of the returned Highway 30 and Chateauguay lands.

Neil McComber has been contracted as an independent consultant to design and facilitate this consultation process to capture the wishes, priorities, and values of Kahnawa’kehró:non.

"The idea is to ask the community what they envision for the returned lands. It′s important to make sure people have their voices heard," said McComber.

As part of the designation process and commitment to community engagement, an informational package has been created to provide Kahnawa’kehró:non with the essential information needed to offer informed feedback on the future designations of these lands. The package includes a historical timeline, research methodology, community portrait, development constraints, soil and water testing results, and detailed parcel analysis.

“We are committed to engaging with the community as we move forward with the designation of these lands," said Veronica Leborgne, Director of Lands. "It is an important step in ensuring that the land designations reflect the needs and priorities of our community. It is also important that we do it in such a way that the community is aware as to what the constraints are on those lands so that best use practices are considered.”

The MCK is actively seeking participants for focus groups to ensure broad engagement, and all community members are encouraged to get involved. To sign up for a focus group or provide feedback, contact Carly Kateri Diabo, Community Engagement Specialist, at 450-632-7500 or carly.diabo@mck.ca.
