“Old” Status Cards Okay to Cross Border

05/28/2009

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to remind the community that the current Indian & Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) Native Status Cards will continue to be accepted by the United States Department of Homeland Security as identification when crossing the border, by land, into the United States for an undetermined period of time – despite the announcement that only passports and enhanced drivers licenses would be acceptable after June 1st.

This information has been confirmed though INAC. The main reason given is that the issuance of the new Secure Certificates of Indian Status has been delayed.

INAC has not yet announced when production of the new Certificates will begin.
