Garbage Pick-up Reduced to Once per Week

06/04/2009

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) announced today that garbage pick-up will be reduced to once-a-week, every Friday, beginning July 1st, 2009. KEPO will also put in place a four-bag limit per household each week, which is two bags down from the original six-bag limit per household, per day.

The reason behind the cut-back is due to a price increase in garbage pick-up. The cost per ton almost doubled from $97 (per ton) due to inflation over the years and a number of other issues.

Community members are asked to respect this change. If four bags are not enough to hold all of a community member’s garbage, we are encouraged to practice recycling and composting to reduce the amount of waste we throw away each week. KEPO will have pamphlets available for those interested in either.
