Heavy Rains Wash Out Roads in Tioweró:ton
07/01/2009
The Lands Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to inform the community that torrential rains, which began on June 30th and continue today, have washed out roads and bridges on the Tioweró:ton Territory making it unsafe for cabin owners. As a result, community members are strongly urged to refrain from traveling to the Territory as they will be denied access until the area is deemed safe to enter.
Flooding has washed away the Main Road, Highway 30, the Second Bridge (near the Falls) and the steel beam walking bridge spanning the Falls. Highway 125 is also partially destroyed.
Capital Construction Crews will be traveling to the Territory once the rains subside to assess the damages to the roads and bridges. Updates will follow and the community will be advised when it is safe to return to the Territory.
For further inquiries please contact Interim Tioweró:ton Coordinator Mia Phillips at the Lands Unit at 450 638 8244.
