Elections to Proceed as Planned

07/01/2009

Following the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s announcement that who can and cannot run for office is the decision of the Electoral Officer and not a Canadian Court, Electoral Officer Lindsay LeBorgne officially announced that the 2009 Elections will go on as scheduled this Saturday, July 4, 2009 at the Kateri School. No changes will be made in relation to the Canadian Court decision of June 30, which calls for Keith Myiow’s name to be put onto the ballot.

“I have based my decision on the criteria I was given. I stand by my initial decision and now the MCK has supported that decision. This is an historic time for Kahnawà:ke. By not allowing the Canadian courts to dictate who can run for office, we are making a statement to Canada that we can make our own decisions. In fact, their decision jeopardizes the autonomy of the Electoral Officer”, said Leborgne.

As a result, the special emergency Community Meeting to be held at the Legion tonight, (Wednesday, July 1) is no longer necessary and will instead be a meeting for candidates only. The meeting had originally been for all community members to attend.
