Justice Survey Deadline Tomorrow
09/03/2009
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke is reminding community members that the deadline to submit surveys to the Kahnawą:ke Justice Commission is tomorrow (Friday), 4 Seskehkó:wa/September at 4pm at the Court of Kahnawą:ke. The survey is being conducted to gauge the communitys thoughts on the issue of a proposed Kahnawą:ke Justice Act and whether or not they would support such a piece of legislation. It takes between fifteen to thirty minutes to fill out the survey. It can be accessed through the kahnawake.com website (See: Kahnawą:ke Justice Video and Survey on main page). However, the survey cannot be filled in on-line; it must be completed by hand. While preliminary results have been overwhelmingly supportive, we cannot be satisfied until we reach an acceptable number of community members, said Justice Portfolio Chief Mike Bush. We need to build better foundations for our own laws and a Kahnawą:ke Justice Act would give us that and allow us a stronger base to build on, and defend, our jurisdiction. The Justice Commission will be asking for a mandate to proceed with a Justice Act at the historic first-ever hearing scheduled for Wednesday, 30 Seskehkó:wa/September.
