MCK Remembers David Cross
10/19/2009
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to ask the community to commemorate David Cross, who died 30 years ago today (October 20, 1979).
Mr. Cross lost his life after being chased across the Mercier Bridge by the Surete du Quebec. He made it to his home on Highway 132 (then called “9C”), challenged police with a stick and was shot and killed in front of his family by Officer Robert Lessard.
Lessard was found criminally responsible but was charged with manslaughter, not murder, as the family had hoped.
Community members are being asked to participate in a moment of silence at 6:05pm this evening, roughly around the time of the incident. K103 Kahnawake radio will broadcast this immediately following its 6pm newscast.
Mr. Cross’ family is continuing in its efforts to commemorate his memory in a more permanent manner.
