No Parking Signs on Old Malone Highway
10/21/2009
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke’s (MCK) Community Protection Unit and Public Works Unit would like to inform the Community that Permanent NO PARKING signs along the eastbound side of the Old Malone Highway have been erected due to several Safety concerns.
Though the signs are posted, Business owners and Community members are being advised that the Peacekeepers have agreed not to enforce these particular signs until January 2010. Public Works had to get the signs up prior to November, when seasonal workers are laid off for the winter. Once enforced however, motorists could be issued tickets between $100 and $200.
Parking on both sides of the street causes the Highway to narrow, which is a problem for Snow Removal and emergency vehicles, such as Fire Trucks and the Ambulance. Further, several “Fender benders” and minor incidences have occurred in some areas. Typical criteria for roads with ‘No Parking’ on one side is a width between 23 and 40 feet. However, the Old Malone Highway, in some areas is barely 34 feet wide. Finally, the eastern area of the highway, where most businesses are located, causes a safety hazard for pedestrians crossing the road.
Finally, though the MCK does have the authority to erect Road Signs without public notification, it is realized this will affect some people. Therefore, those directly affected are asked to call the Health and Safety Department of the Community Protection Unit at 632-0635 or by e-mailing safety.committee@mck.ca with your particular concerns to see if a solution is possible.
