MCK Issues Clarification on MSI Following Local 711 Press Conference
10/22/2009
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawą:ke would like to issue the following information in the aftermath of a press conference held yesterday by representatives of Local 711 in relation to works being carried out on the Mercier Bridge.
Reporters were told that the site has not been visited by CSST inspectors. While that is true, the reason is because Kahnawą:ke has its own certified inspectors. Every person on the job is covered for industrial accidents and/or occupational diseases.
Mohawk Self Insurance (MSI), Kahnawą:kes own workers compensation program, replaces CSST on the Territory
MSI, through the MCKs Community Protection Unit, uses the services of two safety inspectors and one Safety Program officer
In addition to this, the Community Protection Unit has assigned one of the inspectors exclusively to the Mercier bridge project, which exceeds the norms of the construction industry.
MSI has equal or better benefits than CSST
Mohawk Self Insurance was created in 1981.
