MCK and Canadian Pacific Railway Sign Agreements
10/29/2009
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke announced that it has signed a series of agreements with the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), including a Master Agreement that outlines present and future negotiations with the CPR. “These agreements are the product of the MCK signing a Memorandum of Understanding with CPR to negotiate items of mutual interest”, said Grand Chief Mike Delisle Jr. “These agreements, highlighted by the Master agreement, are the beginning of a formal business relationship between Kahnawà:ke and one of the major enterprises within our Territory.” The Master Agreement confirms the working group process that MCK and CPR have been following to maintain their good working relationship and to address issues of importance to the community, including safety, land issues and other contributions for the benefit of the community. This process has generated many positive results for the community, such as agreements on road and utility crossings, addressing water buildup along the railway corridor, and support for a flagman at railway crossing Mile 39.45. A letter of intent was also signed about the potential use of railway corridor lands, for the development of the public commuter train stop for Kahnawà:ke being discussed between MCK, Agences Metropolitan de Transport and other parties. The agreements were signed on Wednesday, October 28th by Grand Chief Michael Ahríhron Delisle Jr. and CPR Vice-President of Real Estate John Walsh.
