Update on issue of letters to ineligible residents
02/10/2010
The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to update the community in regard to the issue of letters that have been sent to people who are not eligible to live on the Territory. Since the delivery of the first letters on Monday, 1 Enníska/February, eight (8) people responded. Three have moved, three have asked for time to make arrangements to move and two have met with Chief & Council to explain their situations. The MCK will deliver reminders to those who have not yet acted or responded, directing them to contact Council immediately. “We’ve spoken to several of the affected people who let us know that they respect the law and will act accordingly,” said Grand Chief Michael Ahríhrhon Delisle, Jr. “While the media has had a field day with this story and some have used the word ‘racist,’ we will, once again, state: the issue isn’t about anyone’s feelings towards non-Natives; it is simply an issue of residency and our right to determine who can and cannot live on the 13,000 acres we call home.” The MCK has not released the names of any of those affected at this time.
