Amendments to Old Malone parking restrictions announced

05/06/2010

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke announced developments regarding parking restrictions on the Old Malone Highway (OMH).

After reviewing proposals for amendments to the restrictions made by the Kahnawà:ke Safety Committee and Chief & Council, the Safety Committee has approved the following amendments (see map below):

1.Restrictions will be lifted from Dustin’s store to Step By Step as the roadway in this area is wide enough to accommodate safety vehicles.
2.No parking 7.5 meters from all corners (intersections) on both sides of the OMH.
3.No parking across from Fire Hall, including on the sides and emergency exits. These areas will be designated Tow-Away Zones.
4.No parking from the corner across from Eileen’s Bakery, east, to crosswalk.
5.No parking 60 feet from the tunnel, west, on both sides of the OMH.
6.Crosswalks will be added at the Environment Protection Office and the intersection of Lazare Road (near Old Malone Medical Center).
7.Changes to restrictions on south side of OMH beginning across from Old Malone Medical Center to Eileen’s Bakery: there will be 10 (ten) minute “stop and go” parking allowed from 7am to 1pm, no parking at all other times.
8.Changes to restrictions on south side of OMH in front the Eastern Door and Seasons Florist: there will be ONE (1) 10 (ten) minute “stop and go” parking spot (per business) allowed from 9am to 5pm.
9.Changes to restrictions on south side of OMH in front the United Church: Parking will be allowed Sundays from 9am to 1pm.

It is important to note that these changes are not yet in effect. A target date of May 24, 2010 has been identified to begin implementation of the amendments. However, this will depend on having the proper signage manufactured. The community will be advised of the exact dates of implementation of the various points. All changes are subject to a 6 month review period by the Safety Committee which will take place in October 2010.
