The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform community members who are traveling into Canada from the United States that the negative impacts are now being experienced, following the implementation of Canadian retaliatory tariffs on Tuesday, September 8th.
The MCK strongly urges community members to retain all receipts for goods purchased in the United States and to carefully document any instances where tariff-related charges are applied at the border. This is unfortunately the reality between the battle of egos with the situation evolving daily.
The MCK, Iroquois Caucus, and Jay Treaty Border Alliance continue to voice a strong opposition to these tariffs as First Nations should not be subjected to them. Various meetings are actively being organized and requested with Federal Agencies and Ministries such as Canada Border Services Agency, Crown Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs Canada, and the Canadian Ministry of Finance.
Below a list of known items that are currently seeing impacts as a result of this trade war: Please note the tariffs apply to goods that are eligible to be marked as U.S. goods under Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement (CUSMA) regulations.

In the meantime, letters will be sent to both Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and U.S. President Donald Trump.
