Wetland restoration work and herbicide application notice

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that the first phase of its Wetland Restoration Project in the Big Fence area will begin the week of September 21st.

This phase involves the targeted treatment of approximately 83 acres of invasive Phragmites australis, a plant species that is negatively impacting wetland health, wildlife habitat, and water flow. The work will be carried out by experienced restoration specialists using drone technology and is expected to take approximately three days, weather permitting.

Two herbicides approved in Canada for invasive phragmites control will be used, including Habitat Aqua for wetland areas and WeatherMax for treatment on dry land.

All treatment areas will be clearly marked with signage. Community members are asked to avoid entering these areas for 48 hours following treatment and to refrain from disturbing treated plants during the following weeks to ensure the effectiveness of the restoration work.

KEPO will host a drop-in information session on Thursday, September 17th, from 5pm to 8pm at Tóta Ma’s, where community members can learn more about the project, ask questions, and provide feedback.

More detailed information, maps, and FAQs are available on our project StoryMap Webpage and any inquiries can be directed to KEPO at environmentprotection@mck.ca
