The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform community members that it has very recently learned that new U.S. mailing rules are in effect as of August 29, 2026. Due to U.S. Executive Order 14324, any shipment to the United States valued under $2500.00 must have duties paid prior to entering the postal system.
Community members are strongly urged to go in person to the Post Office so that staff can explain the steps and help you follow the new requirements.
Important changes:
- These rules apply to all shipments from Canada, no matter which company you use — Canada Post, couriers, or other shipping services.
- Even small items like gifts under $100, documents, and returns must be checked for duties.
- Canada Post can only accept your package if you have proof that duties were paid.
What you must have:
- A Declaration ID — a 13‑character code that shows duties were prepaid.
- Without a Declaration ID, Canada Post cannot create a shipping label for U.S. mail.
How Canada Post is helping:
- Canada Post has partnered with Zonos®, an approved U.S. Customs partner, to calculate and collect duties before your package enters the mail system.
- Zonos provides the Declaration ID, the product’s HS code, and country of origin to make sure duties are correct.
- Paying duties upfront helps your package move through U.S. Customs without delays.
Please share this information with anyone who mails items to the United States. The MCK is currently investigating the situation and will provide more information to the community as it becomes available.
More information will be announced as it becomes available.
