Air Quality Monitor installed at KSS

Public Service Announcement

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) would like to inform the community that an Air Quality Monitor has been installed at Kahnawà:ke Survival School. Air quality is being monitored to track long-term trends and any spikes associated with neighboring industry.

The monitor is an Aeroqual AQS1 unit which measures PM 2.5 (fine particulate matter), NO2 (Nitrogen Dioxide), and O3 (Ozone).

The three pollutants being monitored are recognized as the best indications of unhealthy air quality and are the components of Health Canada’s Air

Quality Health Index (AQHI). These pollutants are most associated with burning fossil fuels and industrial activity. PM 2.5 is commonly associated with dust, smog, and smoke from forest fires.

KEPO will be tracking data from the sensors and publishing the averages on its website. Daily or hourly data is also available upon request. KEPO also runs four Purple Air sensors distributed around the community. Live Purple Air data is available at map.purpleair.com.

For more information, please contact KEPO at 450-635-0600 or environmentprotection@mck.ca.
