Hydro-Québec vegetation control on Tekakwitha Island

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) wishes to inform the community that Hydro-Québec will be conducting vegetation control on Tekakwitha Island on Monday, December 16th. This includes work in the natural island remnant, as illustrated in the accompanying figure. The project involves removing trees located near the powerlines, which have caused recent outages.

Representatives from the Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) will oversee the work to ensure it is conducted responsibly. As part of the effort, an access corridor will be established to minimize impacts on recently restored habitat during future maintenance activities.

Next spring, KEPO will replant the area with low-growing shrubs compatible with the presence of powerlines, reducing the need for ongoing vegetation control. The vegetation removal will be carried out by Asplundh, a contractor specializing in powerline maintenance.

For more information, please contact KEPO at 450-635-0600 or email environmentprotection@mck.ca.
