Public Works urges water conservation amid excessive heat and low rainfall

Shower with falling drops

The Public Works Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is calling on all Kahnawa’kehró:non to take immediate steps to conserve water in response to ongoing excessive heat and a significant lack of rainfall.

This advisory comes as water levels in the St. Lawrence River have dropped to their lowest point in four years. On Sunday morning, the river level was recorded at 4.1 metres, which is 60 centimetres below the seasonal median.

While there is currently no shortage of water, officials warn that continued dry conditions could lead to supply challenges.

“Less water means less dilution, so everything that is industrial discharge, sewer discharge, will of course be more concentrated in the raw water that we take into our plant and make the treatments more difficult,” said Martin Morris, Director of the Public Works Unit.

Kahnawa’kehró:non are asked to refrain from:

  • Watering lawns
  • Filling swimming pools
  • Washing vehicles
  • Other non-essential water uses

These measures are essential to maintaining a stable water supply and ensuring the continued effectiveness of water treatment operations.

“We urge all residents to take these conservation efforts seriously,” Morris added. “Community cooperation is vital during this challenging period.”
