Lloyd Phillips new Chief Political Advisor

Lloyd Phillips

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke is proud to announce the appointment of Lloyd Phillips as Chief Political Advisor to the Council of Chiefs, a role that recognizes his decades-long commitment to public service, security, and community leadership.

Mr. Phillips first entered political life in July 1996, serving ten years on Council before stepping away in 2006. His expertise in public safety led to his appointment as Public Security Advisor to the Quebec Regional Chief from 2007 to 2009. He returned to Council in 2009, serving as Council Chief until 2015, and later ran for Grand Chief.

In 2016, Mr. Phillips joined the Office of the Council of Chiefs (OCC) as a Project Leader, where he played a pivotal role in strategic initiatives. His leadership was further recognized when he was re-elected to Council in 2018 and transitioned to Commissioner of Public Security in February 2019.

As Commissioner, Mr. Phillips led the COVID-19 Task Force throughout the pandemic, coordinated responses to the ACM issue in 2019, and played a critical role in the rail blockade in early 2020. His negotiation efforts with Correctional Service Canada (CSC) and the Ministère de la Sécurité Publique (MSP) resulted in landmark agreements that established a Reintegration Department within Public Safety, supporting parole and probation services for Kahnawà:ke, a first in Canada.

His appointment as Chief Political Advisor reflects a deep trust in his ability to guide the Council through complex political landscapes, advocate for community interests, and foster strong relationships with provincial and federal partners.

“Lloyd’s experience, strategic insight, and unwavering dedication to Kahnawà:ke make him the ideal person to serve in this role,” said Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsahaienhs Cody Diabo. “We look forward to the leadership and continuity he brings to our political affairs.”

Mr. Phillips has begun the transition from Commissioner of Public Security and will fully begin his new role on Monday, October 6, 2025, continuing his legacy of service and advocacy for the people of Kahnawà:ke.
