Purpose:
Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operation of collection, disposal, and related maintenance activities to ensure safe, efficient, and environmentally responsible service delivery. This role provides supervision and direction to frontline staff, coordinates work schedules and resources, ensures compliance with regulatory and organizational standards, and supports continuous improvement across waste management operations.
Roles & Responsibilities:
Operational Leadership
- Supervise, coordinate, and direct daily collection, transfer, recycling, and disposal activities.
- Assign work schedules, routes, and tasks to staff to ensure timely and efficient service delivery.
- Schedules team meetings as required.
- Monitor field operations to ensure adherence to service standards, safety procedures, and quality expectations.
- Serve as the primary point of contact for operational issues, providing direction and troubleshooting as needed.
- Schedule collections of various recyclable materials by external companies.
- Manage projects, activities, and strategies to meet the established goals, objectives, and action items of the operational plan while adhering to yearly budget estimates.
- Coordinate daily operational pick-ups, special collection routes, and transfer station operations.
Asset and Equipment Management
- Oversee the proper operation, maintenance, and care of departmental assets. Ensuring proper operation and maintenance of equipment and vehicles.
- Ensure equipment inspections, repairs, and preventative maintenance schedules are followed.
- Report asset deficiencies and coordinate with maintenance teams to resolve issues promptly.
- Coordinate and revise the bin inventory process.
- Responsible for inventory – parts, materials, equipment, and tools.
Health, Safety , and Compliance
- Promote and enforce health and safety practices and ensure compliance with relevant legislation, regulations, and Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) policies.
- Conduct staff meetings, site safety checks, and incident reports as required.
- Ensure staff complete required training and certifications.
- Responsible for conducting an annual review of operational safety.
Staff Supervision and Performance
- Lead, mentor, and support frontline employees, promoting a positive and respectful work environment.
- Provide on-the-job training, coaching, and feedback to support skill development and performance improvement.
- Participate in performance evaluations and disciplinary processes in accordance with organizational policies and in collaboration with the General Manager.
Customer Service and Communication
- Respond to public inquiries and concerns in a timely and professional manner.
- Set customer service standards.
- Communicate operational updates, route changes, and service adjustments to staff and stakeholders.
- Coordinate with other departments, units, contractors, and external partners as needed.
- Supports educational efforts of the Public Information Coordinator to promote waste diversion and environmental stewardship within the community.
Operational Planning and Continuous Improvement
- Assist with planning routes, staffing levels, equipment needs, and seasonal operations.
- Maintain detailed logs of activities, including route data, incidents, and maintenance issues.
- Identify opportunities to improve operational efficiency, safety, and environmental performance.
- Support the development and implementation of operational procedures, work standards, and best practices.
- Monitor operational key performance indicators using internal tools (Excel).
- Assist in preparing weekly and monthly operational summaries and inventory needs.
- Provide operational reports to meet program reporting obligations as required.
- Assist in the development and updating of operational procedures.
- Support budgeting and procurement by providing inventory updates and supply requirements.
- Populate and maintain the equipment maintenance records in a digital format.
- Assist with the maintenance and update of the Geographical Information Systems GIS attributes table related to bin distribution, repairs, and other pertinent information.
Education & Experience:
- High school diploma or equivalent (post-secondary education in public works, environmental services, or related field is an asset).
- Minimum 3–5 years of experience in waste management, public works, or a related field.
- Experience supervising or leading frontline staff.
- Must possess a Valid Quebec Class 3 or higher driver’s license.
*Certification in workplace safety, WHMIS, or related environmental training is an asset.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Knowledge of all Waste Management Department operations, MCK policies, programs, administration, and operational procedures.
- Supervisory or team lead experience required.
- Excellent leadership, communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to show initiative and be solutions-oriented.
- Intermediate knowledge of all Microsoft Office applications.
- Knowledge of Geographical Information Systems (GIS).

- Ability to communicate in the Kanien’kéha and French languages is an asset.
- The willingness to learn the Kanien’kéha language.
Working Environment:
- Five-day work week in an indoor and outdoor work environment.
- Ability to work in various weather conditions.
- Holiday work required, may be required.
- Early morning start times and occasional overtime may be required (Saturday on-call).
- Ability to exercise flexibility.
- Ability to handle physically demanding tasks of the position, able to lift objects up to 40 lbs.
- Ability to manage moderate stress and productivity pressure and pressure associated with caller and visitor requests.
