About Us

The Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry has been around since the early 1970s, with one employee managing the Indian Act process. The process evolved over time with the implementation of the Mohawk Law in 1984, which introduced blood quantum as the main criteria for addition to the KKR. The Registry was automated, and new employees were hired to manage the increased workload.

In 2004, the Mohawk Registry was renamed the Kanien’kehá:ka Kahnawà:ke Registry, and the Registrar position and Council of Elders Committee were created. Amendments to the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law in 2018 led to the development of the Kahnawà:ke Residency Law, which was implemented in June of 2021.

As of February 28, 2023, the total registered population on the federal list is 11,570 with 6,646 (58%) recognized on Kahnawà:ke Kanien’kehá:ka Registry and 4,927 (42%) not recognized.

The Kahnawà:ke Residency Law was passed on June 17th of 2019. The Kahnawà:ke Residency Law (KRL) was separated from the amended Kahnawà:ke Membership Law (KML) to focus on who may reside on the territory of Kahnawà:ke. Several categorizations under the KML grant an individual the ability to reside on the territory. A person recognized on the Kahnawà:ke Kanien’keha:ka Registry holds the right to reside, as well as a person who has the status of an approved Kahnawà:ke Resident or one of the three possible permits, which include a Residency, Humanitarian, or Work/Education permits. Although passed, the KRL is not yet implemented and is currently undergoing regulations and procedural development. The aim is to have the KRL fully functional before 2020.

FAQ

Community members who participated in the Community Decision Making Process (CDMP) to amend the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Law (KKL) requested that residency should be a separate law where individuals not on the KKR, can apply to be authorized as an Approved Kahnawà:ke Resident or apply for a Permit.

Call the Office of the Kanien’kehá:ka of Kahnawà:ke Registry (OKKR) at 450-638-0500 to determine whether you are on the KKR.

An application can be made for one of the following;

  • Recognition on the KKR
  • An Approved Kahnawà:ke Resident
  • A Residency Permit
  • A Work/Education Permit
  • A Humanitarian Permit

This information must be declared in the application and documentation must be submitted.

Yes, all applications have a $30 fee. In addition, applications for Approved Kahnawà:ke Resident and for any Permit types require a Criminal Background Check at an additional cost.

You must apply to the KRL as an Approved Kahnawà:ke Resident or for one of the Permit categories.

At that time, you will not have permission to reside on the Territory.

All applications are available for pickup at the OKKR office located at the Kahnawà:ke Services Complex.
