The Public Works Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to advise homeowners to take precautions ahead of the extreme cold temperatures forecasted over the coming days. Prolonged exposure to severe cold can increase the risk of frozen or burst water pipes if preventative measures are not taken.
For mobile and older homes with a crawl space:
- Cracks or openings in the foundation should be sealed, and all cellar or crawl space windows should be securely closed
- Water lines should be properly insulated using foam sleeves, and heat tape should be in good working condition
- Skirting around mobile homes should be fully secured to prevent cold air from entering
Additional steps for all homeowners:
- Indoor temperatures should be maintained at a consistent level of at least 10°C, especially in areas where plumbing is located
- Cabinet doors beneath sinks may be left open to allow warm air to circulate around pipes
- Any exposed or vulnerable pipes should be insulated to reduce heat loss
- Allowing water to flow steadily from a tap during periods of extreme cold can help prevent pipes from freezing
Homeowners are also reminded to shut off exterior water supplies and leave outside valves open to reduce the risk of damage caused by freezing. Residences that have previously experienced frozen pipes may require extra precautions during extreme low temperatures.
Taking these steps can help protect household plumbing and prevent costly repairs during the winter season.
