Purpose:

Provides skilled and general labor, and trade support in the field of infrastructure construction and rehabilitation, new building construction, building renovations, major and minor capital projects. 

Roles & Responsibilities:

To provide labor and trade support during centralized infrastructure construction and rehabilitation, according to BNQ standards. 

  • Installs and repairs centralized water and sewer systems. 
  • Install and repairs storm drainage systems and connections. 
  • Perform leak detection of sewer systems during construction. 
  • Install temporary waterline networks during construction projects. 
  • Perform pressure testing of water and sewer systems. 
  • Operate compaction equipment to achieve engineered standards. 
  • Perform deforestation works where needed for projects. 
  • Assist engineers and technicians on projects. 
  • Work with and assist consultants during environmental assessments. 
  • Install and maintain traffic signalization during all construction work. 
  • Perform traffic control/flagging when needed. 

To provide labor and trade support during rural septic system and well installations 

  • Installs and repairs rural residential well water systems. 
  • Installs and repairs piping, sewage containment structures, and connections for rural residential septic systems. 
  • Repair landscaping and property. 
  • Assist well drilling contractors during construction. 

To provide labor and trade support during bridge and culvert construction and rehabilitation 

  • Install and repairs steel, concrete, and plastic culverts for vehicle and pedestrian access. 
  • Construct and repair wood and concrete bridges, and abutments. 
  • Fabricates and installs guardrails, ramps, and handrails. 

To provide labor and trade support during road construction and rehabilitation 

  • Construct new roads for residential developments, rural expansion, and various capital projects. 
  • Work with specialized contractors; asphalting, concrete curbing, Hydro Quebec, Bell Canada and MTQ. 
  • Operate compaction equipment to achieve engineered standards. 
  • Construct temporary roads during construction. 

To provide labor and trade support during building construction, building renovations, and building upgrades 

  • Performs skilled carpentry related to building construction including framing, finishing, cabinetry, roofing, flooring, sheetrock, windows and door installations, decks, stairs and handrails, insulation and acoustic, ceramics, moldings, plastering, painting, fixtures, flashings, siding, and trims. 
  • Performs skilled concrete work including reinforcement steel installation, forming, foundations, footings, sidewalks, slabs. 
  • Performs landscaping work including topsoil installation, seeding, sodding, grading, and leveling.

To follow the Capital Construction operating procedures 

  • Performs daily preventative maintenance on assigned vehicle and promptly reports any defects or required repairs needed. 
  • Performs weekly greasing. 
  • Cleans and washes assigned vehicle on a regular basis. 
  • Operates and performs daily maintenance on light equipment, including quick cut saws, core cut saws, jumping jacks, plate compactors, generators, chainsaws, woodchippers, diesel pumps, gas pumps, augers, weed whackers, etc. 

Education & Experience:

  • DEP in Vocational or related field, plus one (1) year relevant experience. 

OR 

  • High School Diploma, plus five (5) years’ relevant construction experience. 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

  • A sound knowledge and skills associated with the principles and practices related to construction and repairs of centralized water and sewer systems. 
  • A basic knowledge of mechanics to maintain diesel and gas engines, pumps, saws, generators. 
  • A good knowledge of the Kahnawake’s water and sewer networks. 
  • Sound knowledge and ability to perform rigging, hoisting, and lifting with cranes and heavy equipment. 
  • To become familiar with the Mohawk Council operational procedures. 
  • To preserve the health and safety of the community. 
  • Good oral and written communication skills. 
  • Good judgment and common sense. 
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision. 
  • Construction safety certification (OSHA 30 or ASP 30) is a requirement. 
  • Possession of a construction safety course attestation is a requirement. 
  • Drinking water distribution network certification (ORD) is an asset. 
  • Traffic control and signalization certification is an asset. 
  • Asbestos Operations & Maintenance certification (OSHA Class III) is an asset. 
  • Asbestos supervisor contractor is a requirement. 
  • CPR & First Aid certification is an asset. 
  • Knowledge of welding and burning is an asset. 
  • Excavation training, trenching, working with heavy equipment and trench boxes in an asset. 
  • Sound knowledge and skill on the principles and practices related to heavy construction. 
  • Thorough understanding of the safety codes and practices associated with road and heavy construction. 
  • Must possess a valid Quebec driver’s license. 
  • Conducts business with internal and external clients in a tactful, discreet, and courteous manner. 
  • Maintains confidentiality. 
  • Adhere to the MCK Administration Manual-Personal Policy and Kanien’haka Language initiatives. 
  • Ability to communicate in the French languages is essential to the position. 
  • Ability to communicate in the Kanien’kéha languages is an asset. 
  • The willingness to learn the Kanien’kéha language is required.

Working Environment:

  • Five-day work week in an outdoor (and indoor) work environment. 
  • Occasional overtime may be required.  
  • Evening and weekend work hours as required. 
  • Ability and willingness to work in extreme, and seasonal weather conditions. 
  • Moderate stress levels and productivity pressures associated with carrying out and completing tasks. 
  • Working in trenches is common and frequent. 
  • Working at heights on roofs, buildings, and scaffolding is common and frequent. 
  • Must also be able to lift and/or move up to regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. 
  • Working with equipment, instruments or machinery that may be potential source of accident or injury.
