Purpose:
Provides recycling and special materials collection services to the community.
Roles & Responsibilities:
To provide curb side recycling and special items collections for the community of Kahnawake.
- To safely drive and operate the recycling truck along the designated routes and provide recycling pick up service to the community as per established schedules.
- Assists with all aspects of the recycling operation.
- Collects and transports recyclable and special collection materials in a safe manner according to the recycling collection procedures and related training.
- Follows assigned recycling collection and transportation routes using either light trucks and trailer or the heavy truck.
- Collects all recyclable and special collection materials that require either automated and manual loading.
- Assists in loading vehicles with materials for delivery or collection, using the forklift when necessary.
- Supports community members who require assistance to participate in recycling.
To sort recyclables (in-house) and transfer of recyclables to proper destinations.
- Sorts recyclable and non-recyclable materials into their proper containers at the recycling facility for delivery to or collections by third party.
- Sort through cardboard, and with the use of the baler, prepares cardboard bales.
- Obtains proper documentation/weight tickets required by the transfer/recycling facilities and forwards documents to Manager.
- Assists loading of vehicles with sorted materials for delivery or pick up.
- Assists clients who deliver their recycling at the Depot.
- Assists with the cleanup of both interior and exterior of the building daily.
- Ensures work area is cleaned for the following workday.
- Ensures work equipment and vehicles are clean and properly maintained.
To communicate the recycling program to the community
- Assists with the distribution of bins and supports the record keeping set in place.
- Distributes information pamphlets /notices and calendars as necessary.
- Assists with the collection and removal of recyclables from community events.
- Assists with other communications as needed.
Education & Experience
- High School Diploma, plus a valid Quebec Class 3 driver’s license with five (5) years relevant experience.
- Forklift Operator Certification, or (5) years relevant experience.
- Hazardous Waste handling and storage certification, or equivalent experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
- Strong knowledge of current recycling practices and have a sincere regard for the environment.
- Strong knowledge of the Kahnawà:ke road network and the distinction between local & provincial road networks for record keeping purposes.
- Ability to operate the cardboard baler.
- Excellent knowledge of general safety codes and practices associated with heavy equipment operation.
- General knowledge of vehicle inspection, mechanical maintenance requirements and ability to make carry out small maintenance needs.
- Ability to multitask and deal with the public in a courteous manner.
- Sound oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and in a team-oriented environment.
- Familiarity with Public Works operational practices, administrative procedures, and MCK policies.
- Demonstrates professionalism, discretion, and courtesy when interacting with internal and external clients, fostering positive and respectful working relationships.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Adhere to the MCK Policies and Kanien’kéha Language initiatives.
- Ability to communicate in the Kanien’kéha and French languages is an asset.
- The willingness to learn the Kanien’kéha language.
Working Environment:
- Five-day work week outdoors.
- Ability to work under inclement weather conditions and in outdoor working conditions.
- Able to manage working overtime and holiday schedules.
- Ability to manage moderate stress associated with dealing with the public.
- Physically fit and able to lift heavy objects and materials (up to 50 pounds).
