Press Release

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that Ohén:ton Í:rate ne Ratitsénhaienhs Cody Diabo will be in Ottawa, Ontario, participating in the Jay Treaty Border Alliance (JTBA) High Table meeting today (April 27, 2026) alongside other Onkwehón:we leaders and Government of Canada representatives.

The High Table brings Indigenous leadership together with Government of Canada delegates for direct discussion on what people are experiencing at the border and what needs to change. The agenda includes legislative timelines, recommendations coming out of technical tables, and how the work will be structured going forward so progress is measurable and accountable.

Co-convenors for the High Table include Regional Chief Abram Benedict (Chiefs of Ontario) and the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety. Government participation also includes the Honourable Rebecca Alty, Minister of Crown-Indigenous Relations, and the Honourable Lena Metlege Diab, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship, alongside officials from Canada Border Services Agency, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs, Public Safety Canada, Global Affairs Canada, Finance Canada, and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

“Our families and our Nations have lived with this border placed across our territories for generations, and our right to move freely still remains,” said Cody Diabo. “This High Table is an opportunity to sit with government delegates, speak plainly about what is happening at ports of entry, and advance practical solutions that respect our rights and keep our people safe.”

Diabo is expected to return to the Territory this evening.
