The Public Works Unit of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform Kahnawa’kehró:non that it will begin trials of an organic herbicide for weed control along local roads, sidewalks, and recreational paths.
Application is scheduled to begin next week, on Monday, July 6th, targeting weeds growing in cracks between pavement and concrete sidewalks. The herbicide contains Caprylic Acid (46.24%) and Capric Acid (33.66%) as its active ingredients. These naturally occurring fatty acids break down the waxy protective layer on plant leaves, disrupting cell walls and causing weeds to dehydrate and turn brown within hours.
The active ingredients are widely used and recognized as an effective option in organic agriculture and for non-food crop applications.
Application process
Public Works crews will use portable sprayers to apply the organic herbicide, targeting only weeds growing in cracks within pavement and concrete surfaces.
Application must be carried out under dry weather conditions and typically produces visible results within 12 to 72 hours.
