Call for Judges of the Court of Kahnawà:ke

The Kahnawà:ke Justice Commission is inviting interested persons to submit applications for appointment as a Judge of the Court of Kahnawà:ke. The submission period begins today, Wednesday, November 12, 2025, and ends at 4pm on Friday, December 12, 2025. There are three (3) vacancies to fill.

Judges will perform the duties set forth in the Kahnawà:ke Justice Act and related regulations, theTerms of Reference for Judges of the Court of Kahnawà:ke and any other applicable Kahnawà:ke laws, regulations, policies, or procedures on a sessional basis.  Judges will be competent to hear all matters within the Court’s jurisdiction.

To serve as a Judge of the Court of Kahnawà:ke, a person must: 

  • not have pled guilty, been found guilty, been convicted, and/or sentenced for a criminal offence;
  • not have filed for bankruptcy or been declared bankrupt;
  • have formal legal training;
  • have a minimum of seven (7) years of experience as a practicing lawyer;
  • be a member in good standing of a recognized bar association in North America, or if no longer a member, must have retired in good standing or have been a member in good standing at the time of discontinuance;
  • have the requisite knowledge of law applicable to the Mohawk Territory of Kahnawà:ke and/or be willing to acquire training to gain that knowledge; and
  • have knowledge of Kanien’kehá:ka culture and customs and/or be willing to acquire training to gain that knowledge.

Applications must be accompanied by a letter of intent, a resume, the names and contact information of two (2) professional references, and proof of educational requirements.
