The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke (MCK) will be conducting fish monitoring activities in collaboration with the River Institute (RI) and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne (MCA) on Friday, September 4.
A team of approximately 10 staff members will conduct seine netting in Tekakwitha Bay, also known as Recreation Bay (see map for locations) as part of the Fish Identification Nearshore Survey (FINS) and KEPO’s Aquatic Stewardship Program. The FINS team will also be flying a drone to capture imagery of the fish collection areas. The information collected will support ongoing efforts to better understand and monitor fish populations and biodiversity within nearshore habitats of the upper St. Lawrence River.
The FINS program, which began in 2015, aims to characterize fish biodiversity in nearshore environments. Both KEPO’s Aquatic Stewardship Program and FINS have been active in Kahnawà:ke since 2021. Native fish species collected during the monitoring activities will be released unharmed. KEPO staff will accompany all collaborators throughout the project.
