Firearms used near Cabin area in Tioweró:ton

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke and the Kahnawake Mohawk Peacekeepers wish to inform the community that there have been multiple reports of community members shooting firearms in the cabin areas in Tioweró:ton.

“This poses a significant danger to lives and property. Even if precautions are taken, stray bullets can easily travel up to and including one kilometer or more,” said Peacekeeper Constable Kyle Zachary. “Projectiles from firearms can penetrate walls, and unintentionally harm or kill innocent people, including children and pets.”

If found guilty, offenders can be sentenced to a prison term not exceeding two (2) years on a first offense. For a second or subsequent offense, a prison term not exceeding five (5) years.

“Remember, safety is everyone’s responsibility,” said Tioweró:ton Manager Tracey Snow. “Irresponsible gun use endangers your neighbors and your community. Let’s work together to keep our Territory safe by using the designated shooting ranges.”
