Heat Warning issued – recycling and compost pickup affected

The Public Safety Division of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawake would like to inform the community that Environment Canada has issued a Heat Warning due to the high heat expected over the next three (3) days.

The Humidex values are expected to exceed 40 beginning this afternoon (Monday) and remain high through Thursday, with temperatures averaging between 30°C and 35°C (86°F and 95°F).

Due to the extreme high heat, and for the safety of employees, the Waste Management Department will complete all collections before 12pm noon on each of the high heat days. Please have all recycling, special collection items, and compost out by 7am sharp, and ensure your bin is at least 3/4 full before placing it at the curb. There will be no afternoon collections.

During high-heat events, it’s recommended to drink plenty of water, even before you feel thirsty.

Young children, pregnant women, the elderly, those with chronic underlying medical issues, and people working outdoors are at a higher risk.SIGNS & SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION

The victim′s skin is hot, red and could be sweating. The body temperature is very high, sometimes as high as 105 degrees. Heat exhaustion could lead to a life-threatening emergency and requires prompt action. Summon professional help. Get the victim into a cool place.

COOL THE VICTIM AS QUICKLY AS POSSIBLE IN ANY MANNER POSSIBLE!

Place the victim into a bathtub of cool water, wrap in wet sheets and place in an air-conditioned room (if possible).

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke wishes to inform the community that all its administrative offices will be closed for Rotiio’ténion Raonenhnísera, Labor Day on Monday, September 7th.

Service Schedule for Labor Day:

  • Recycling & Compost CollectionWill continue as usual – Please place bins curbside by 7am
  • Transfer DepotCLOSED for the day
  • Town GarageCLOSED – All cardboard drop-offs postponed to Tuesday, September 8th

 

All essential services will remain in operation. Regular business hours will resume on Tuesday, September 8th, at 8:30am.
