Indian Boarding Homes Class Action – Notice of Settlement

Public Service Announcement

The Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke would like to inform the community of a Notice issued on May 21, 2024, for the Indian Boarding Homes Class Action Settlement. The Indian Boarding Homes Program, created by the Government of Canada, removed First Nations and Inuit children from their communities and placed them in private homes for the purpose of attending school.

You may be eligible for compensation if:

  • You were in the Indian Boarding Homes Program between September 1, 1951, and June 30, 1992,
  • Canada was responsible for your placement in the Indian Boarding Homes Program after June 30, 1992. 

Individuals who have passed away are eligible for compensation if they died on or after July 24, 2016. Representatives of deceased individuals may claim compensation on their behalf.

The claims process is not yet open and will only begin on Wednesday, August 21, 2024.

  • Claim forms must be complete and sent to the Claims Administrator by the Claims Deadline of Monday, February 22, 2027.
  • Opt-Out forms must be submitted by the Opt-Out Deadline of Monday, July 22, 2024.

Easter Holiday office closure

Friday, April 3rd & Monday, April 6th, 2026

All administrative offices of the Mohawk Council of Kahnawà:ke will be closed.

 

Please note the following changes to Waste Management Department services during this period:

 

  • Friday, April 3rd – Administrative offices closed
  • Monday, April 6th – Waste Management services resume as usual; however, there will be no cardboard drop‑offs
  • Monday, April 6th – Transfer Depot will operate with reduced hours, from 8am to 2pm

 

Garbage pickup service will continue through the holiday without interruption.

 

All essential services will remain operational throughout the office closures. Regular administrative office hours will resume on Tuesday, April 7th, at 8:30am.
