Purpose:

Plans, prepares, and facilitates the cultural programming for the five-year cultural workshop series training plan. Ensures alignment with the Tsi Niionkwarihò:ten Tsitewaháhara’n Language and Culture strategic action plan and the needs of the language and culture training program. 

Roles & Responsibilities:

To administer the five-year cultural program of studies, according to the goals and objectives outlined in the MCK Five Year Language and Cultural Training Plan. 

  • Plans, develops and administers the five-year cultural program of studies. 
  • Identifies and develops short and long-range goals with objectives. 
  • Develops and implements assessment and measuring procedures. 
  • Ensures proper records of participation are reported. 
  • Maintains and updates the five-year cultural curriculum file system including cultural educational tools and curriculum support items. 
  • Assists with the evaluation of the cultural training components effectiveness and identifies areas for improvement. 
  • Participates on various related working group meetings including organizational settings, strategic planning and networking opportunities related to cultural content. 
  • Participates in the Tsi Niionkwarihò:ten Tsitewaháhara’n Planning Group meetings, as required. 
  • Responsible for substituting classes for the language and cultural components of the Five-Year Language and Culture Training Program in the absence of teaching staff. 

To ensure language and cultural linkages are identified within the Five-Year Training Plan for delivery within the Kanien’kéha language classes. 

  • Identifies the linkages between language and culture by providing translations, interpretations of symbolisms, explanation on cultural workshop content and differences between conversation and symbolic language. 
  • Assists in researching and developing cultural curriculum to incorporate into the language training component. 
  • Encourages students to learn and use our Kanien’kehá:ka values and teachings in everyday work, family and social settings while incorporating their language knowledge. 
  • Develops curriculum that supports the importance of learning both the Kanien’kéha language and the Kanien’kehá:ka culture. 
  • Provides direction, guidance and support for students to use the traditional knowledge through cultural practices and language usage. 
  • Assists and participates in language projects, activities, and events, as needed. 
  • Applies positive reinforcement techniques and initiatives to encourage employees to learn Kanien’kéha and increase cultural competency and awareness. 

Participates in and assists with long term program development, evaluation, networking and expansion opportunities while ensuring program continuance as part of the Five-Year Language and Culture Training Program Strategic Plan. 

  • Identifies and develops cultural content for community events and presentations as part of the Language and Culture Network collaborations and for KOR Cultural Awareness Month. 
  • Networks and seeks out other language and cultural programs and resources for program collaboration and development. 
  • Networks and seeks out cultural training and development opportunities to update and enhance existing cultural curriculum. 
  • Advises on culture, history and traditions according to the organizations needs including the needs of the Chief & Council and other units and departments. 
  • Attends meetings as requested by the General Manager pertaining to cultural content and requests. 
  • Provides outsourcing services, as requested, through the Language and Culture Network and other external requests. 
  • Consolidates and develops a master file system for all curriculum and workshop course content for curriculum sharing within networking opportunities. 
  • Suggest ideas, methods, activities for seeing and hearing the language and culture more frequently in the office environment. 

Education & Experience:

  • Certificate in Indigenous Studies or related field of studies, plus two (2) years of relevant experience. OR 
  • High School Diploma, plus three (3) years relevant experience with fluency in Kanien’kéha and an excellent understanding of Haudenosaunee traditional teachings. OR 
  • The ability to speak the Kanien’kéha language with fluency and has the skill and sound knowledge of Haudenosaunee traditional teachings. 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Strongly motivated self-starter and ability to work under pressure. 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision. 
  • Strong communication and public speaking skills. 
  • Ability to assist in the develop and deliver basic curriculum maps and lesson plans/outlines. 
  • Must have organizing, planning and development skills. 
  • Sound interpersonal skills and good professional judgement. 
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office or willingness to learn basic computer programs and standard office procedures. 
  • Strong beliefs that history and identity must remain an integral part of Kanien’kehá:ka culture. 
  • Sound knowledge of Haudenosaunee history, culture, teachings and values. 
  • Experience teaching cultural awareness, indigenous history and education. 
  • Must possess a thorough knowledge and understanding of historical trauma and intergenerational trauma of indigenous people and their effects on our people. 
  • Experience in a community setting working with a range of people including young adults and elders. 
  • Sensitivity to audience and personal beliefs. 
  • Ability to promote and apply Kanien’kehá:ka culture, values, traditions and teachings on the job. 
  • Awareness and understanding of ethnostress and how it relates to one’s ability to learn. 
  • Ability to work well in a team setting as well as independently demonstrating Haudenosaunee values of Ka’nikonhrí:io. 
  • Ability to motivate employees to want to learn Kanien’kéha, culture and identity. 
  • Demonstrates professionalism, discretion, and courtesy when interacting with internal and external clients, fostering positive and respectful working relationships. 
  • Maintains confidentiality. 
  • Adhere to the MCK policies and Kanien’kéha Language initiatives. 
  • The willingness to learn the Kanien’kéha language is required. 
  • Ability to communicate in the Kanien’kéha and French languages is an asset. 

Working Environment:

  • Five-day workweek. 
  • Occasional overtime to meet the needs of the program (i.e. evenings). 
  • Moderate stress and sensitive situations. 
  • Occasional travel within and outside community. 
  • Indoor and outdoor classroom environments in all seasons. 
  • Moderate hands-on physical activities and demands requiring strength and endurance.
