Purpose:
Assist with aquatic and terrestrial environmental projects in Kahnawà:ke and Tioweró:ton. Two areas of focus are the implementation of the Aquatic Stewardship Program in Kahnawà:ke and the Tioweró:ton lake and river stewardship projects.
Is responsible for assisting in the implementation of these and other projects
Roles & Responsibilities:
To participate in the implementation of the Aquatic Stewardship Program in Kahnawà:ke
- Work with KEPO’s Environmental Project Coordinator – Aquatic Habitats to conduct electrofishing, macroinvertebrate sampling and analysis and water quality sampling.
- Implement citizen science initiatives with local schools and community members.
- Input, process, and interpret results from inventories and communicate these to the community.
- Research sources of water impairment and present findings to the General Manager of Field Science including recommendations for enhancing water quality in the community.
- Participate in restoration activities including invasive plant removal, planting native species, and monitoring restoration projects and zones.
To assist with the implementation of project work in Tioweró:ton.
- Participate in field campaigns to assess water levels, water quality, and overall health of Tioweró:ton lakes.
- Analyze findings, prepare reports, and present results to community members.
- Evaluate habitats in Tioweró:ton to contribute to environmental planning for long-term sustainable of the Territory.
- Engage with community members to identify areas of concern and opportunities for enhancements to the environment and resources.
To assist with other projects as required.
- Assist with other initiatives including but not limited to invasive plant control, Emerald ash borer management activities, climate change initiatives, education initiatives, environmental monitoring, and community engagement.
Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Science Computer Science, Geography, or a related field, plus one (1) year relevant experience.
OR
- DEC in Environmental Science Computer Science, Geography, or a related field, plus two (2) year relevant experience.
OR
- High School Diploma, plus five (5) years relevant experience.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
Interest in and knowledge of environmental issues.
- Strong organizational, coordination, communication, writing, and computer skills.
- Comfortable speaking in front of an audience.
- Fishing experience.
- Ability to work independently.
- Strong attention to detail.
- Creative and ability to problem solve.
- Knowledge of the Kahnawà:ke and Tioweró:ton Territories.
- Conducts business with internal and external clients in a tactful, discreet, and courteous manner.
- General wilderness and outdoor skills including plant and animal identification, tracking, hunting, camping, and First Aid are all highly valued assets and will be considered when evaluating relevant experience.
- Adhere to the MCK Administration Manual-Personnel Policy and Kanien’kéha Language initiatives. Ability to occasionally lift loads of up to 50 lbs (22.5 kg) an asset.
- Experience and comfort with paddling and/or boating is an asset.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- Ability to communicate in the Kanien’kéha language is an asset.
- The willingness to learn the Kanien’kéha language is required.
Working Environment:
- Five-day work week in an office environment as well as the field.
- Exposure to a variety of climatic conditions.
- Moderate overtime to meet deadlines.
