Kaniaterowanen/St Lawrence River Community Visioning Survey

Public Service Announcement

The Kahnawake Environment Protection Office (KEPO) is excited to announce a new initiative aimed at engaging the community in discussions about the St. Lawrence River, known as Kaniaterowanen. Building on the success of gathering community history related to the North Creek (Whakeras Creek), KEPO seeks to further involve community members in shaping the future of the river. The primary goal is to collect invaluable local knowledge that will help guide upcoming projects dedicated to protecting and advocating for a healthier Kaniaterowanen.

Key Upcoming Projects:

  • Research Collaboration: KEPO, in partnership with The River Institute and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, will extend research on the health of the St. Lawrence River from Kingston to Lake St. Francis, encompassing areas further downstream.
  • Regional Assessment: This initiative aims to evaluate the impact of past, present, and future developments on the river and its surroundings. The assessment not only seeks to prevent further harm but also to address existing damage.

Understanding the ecosystem health of the natural world is the first step to improving it, and the community′s knowledge is key to that understanding. KEPO needs feedback from the community concerning what is most enjoyable about the river, concerns, and challenges facing the river and its vast ecosystem.

The Kaniaterowá:nen Community Visioning Survey is now open. Click here to participate in the survey which will be open until Thursday, October 31st.

Community members can obtain more information by contacting KEPO at 450-635-0600 or email environmentprotection@mck.ca.
