KEPO Invites Kahnawa’kehró:non to join the Annual Christmas Bird Count

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) is pleased to lead Kahnawà:ke’s participation in the Annual Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, December 14, 2024. This event is not a workshop but a hands-on opportunity to practice birding while contributing to important community science.

Kahnawa’kehró:non can join one of two teams co-led by KEPO staff and volunteer birders. Those who prefer to participate from home are encouraged to record all birds visiting their feeders or yards throughout the day. Space is limited for team participation, so early sign-up is recommended.

Event Details:

  • Time: From sunrise to late afternoon
  • 2 Teams:
  • Inland Team: Covers areas such as Big Fence, Tekakwitha Island, green spaces along the seaway, old railroad tracks, Tower Road, golf clubs along Route 207, and common lands near Highway 30
  • Seaway Team: Focuses on the North Wall area, from the Ste. Catherine locks to the end of the Kahnawà:ke land base

Both teams will stay on main roads to avoid disturbing private properties.

KEPO has proudly supported the Christmas Bird Count for 15 years, contributing to this community science initiative led by Bird Protection Quebec, which has monitored bird populations for 88 years in the Montreal area.

To sign up or for more information, contact KEPO at 450-635-0600 or environmentprotection@mck.ca.
