KEPO to host 2 community events on invasive species

Phragmites invasive species

The Kahnawà:ke Environment Protection Office (KEPO) is inviting community members to two (2) upcoming events focused on invasive species awareness and control.

The first event, taking place on Wednesday, June 25th, will begin at 5pm at the 207 Restaurant, where a light meal will be provided. This session will feature a presentation on the management of Phragmites (common reed), an aggressive invasive plant species threatening local ecosystems. Representatives from First Nation Phragmites Control (FNPC) will share insights from the front lines of management efforts. Following the presentation, participants will visit a nearby site affected by Phragmites—comfortable walking shoes are recommended. The event will conclude by 7pm.

The second event, Introduction to Invasive Species Control, will be held on Saturday, June 28th, from 9:30am to 12 noon on Tekakwitha Island (meeting at the beach). This hands-on workshop will help participants identify common invasive species such as wild chervil, garlic mustard, common buckthorn, and wild parsnip. KEPO will demonstrate prevention and control methods and offer advice for managing these species on private property. Participants in the workshop should bring boots, water bottles, pants, and preferably long-sleeved shirts if they wish to take part in removals. KEPO will provide gloves, shovels, and coveralls.

Both events are reserved for Kahnawakeró:non, and registration is required.

To register or for more information about either event, please contact KEPO at environmentprotection@mck.ca or call 450-635-0600.
