Tsi Niionkwarihò:ten Tsitewaháhara'n Language and Culture Training Program

In 2007, the Tsi Niionkwarihò:ten Tsitewaháhara’n Language and Culture Training Program was created as a result of various events, including the Mohawk Language Law’s passing in 1999 and proposals for language and culture training plans. The program was established to promote the Kanien’kéha language and cultural education.

About Us

The program has consistently grown and developed, forming relationships with various clients and community services. Creative partnerships and program-sharing initiatives have resulted, including collaborations with the Kanien’kehá:ka Onkwawén:na Raotitióhkwa Language and Cultural Center and the establishment of the Tewahará:tat Tsi Niionkwarihò:ten/Language and Culture Network.

Services

Every year, twenty students can participate in the MCK Five Year Language & Culture Training Program through various organizations. The program lasts for 35 weeks and includes both language and cultural instruction.

  • Kanien’kéha language classes are held weekly, with a curriculum that covers basic vocabulary and phrases progressing yearly according to monthly topics. An online language learning software program, Quizlet, is also used for independent learning and reinforcement. Periodic extracurricular activities are also offered to encourage natural speaking.
  • Our cultural curriculum is designed for beginner-level students with little or no previous knowledge. Each year, we offer a Cultural Workshop Series that covers the Creation Story and progresses historically and culturally. Our aim is to help students gain a base of understanding and confidence in practicing our cultural traditions and incorporating them into everyday life.

Kanien’kéha translation services are provided upon request and availability at the Tsi Niionkwarihò:ten Tsitewaháhara’n Center. The organization also offers standardized language training to encourage usage among staff and the community.
